Living With Art: How to Curate a Collection at Home
A designer's approach to living with art: choosing pieces, scale, placement, lighting and protecting your collection in a Miami home.

Miami is one of the most important art cities in the world. Every December, collectors from everywhere arrive for Art Basel Miami Beach, and galleries in Wynwood, the Design District and Little River stay busy all year. Yet many beautiful homes still treat art as the last detail, a frame to fill an empty wall.
For us, art is where a home finds its soul. It is the most personal layer of any interior.
Start With What Moves You
The best collections are not built to match the sofa. They are built from pieces that say something to the people who live with them. We encourage clients to choose art they love first, and then we design the space to honor it. A room can be adjusted around a painting. A painting chosen only for color rarely survives the next redecoration.
Scale and Proportion
A small piece on a large wall feels lost. As a guide, art above a sofa or console usually works best at roughly two thirds of the furniture’s width. A single large work often has more impact than several small ones, especially in the tall living rooms of Miami homes and penthouses. Grouped works should read as one composition, with consistent spacing between frames.
Placement and Height
We hang most art so its center sits near eye level for a standing person, then adjust for furniture below and ceiling height. In dining rooms and bedrooms, where people are seated or lying down, we often hang slightly lower. Hallways, stair landings and the wall facing the entrance are wonderful places for a strong piece, because they are seen in movement.
Light Makes Art Come Alive
The right lighting transforms a painting. Adjustable recessed fixtures, discreet picture lights or track lighting with warm, high quality LEDs bring out color and texture without glare. We plan art lighting during the design phase, not after the walls are finished. Read more in our article on lighting design in Miami.
Protecting Your Collection in Miami
Sun and humidity are serious risks for art. We keep works on paper and photographs away from direct sunlight, use UV protective glazing in frames, and control humidity carefully, especially in homes that stay closed part of the year. For valuable pieces, professional installation, secure hanging hardware and an updated inventory for insurance are essential.
More Than Paintings
Art at home can be sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, a collectible design chair or an object brought back from a trip. Mixing mediums gives a home depth and makes it feel collected over time rather than decorated in one day.
Building a Collection With Your Designer
We often work with galleries and artists to find pieces for our clients, and we can commission works sized and imagined for a specific wall. The result is a home that feels truly yours. As we wrote in Wall Layers in Interior Design, texture, light and art together give a wall its presence.
